Well Jake, after this carset is done I may well do sets for 2009 and 2010 so there should be plenty of cars to choose from...

Really nice. It was a rather short time, but I liked these FIA-GT cars.

Me too. We didn't have the races live over here in the UK, but we had a highlights programme that showed all the action from FIA GT's and F3000 on Saturday afternoons when there was no GP on, and I remember the Mercs always looked spectacularly fast, mainly because they seemed to have no suspension at all and bobbled around madly over any bump bigger than a gnat's eyebrow! It was a real shame that Porsche pulled out after being trounced in '98, leaving the FIA with no option but to can the series. Plus it wasn't GT racing in the true sense - The '98 Merc and Porsche were essentially prototype sportscars and so it was hideously expensive.

It was F3000, Porsche Supercup and FIA GT racing commentated by Simon Taylor, always overlooked as a broadcaster.

We also got Champions of the Future, where we first saw Lewis Hamilton. Trying to find the 98 season review video all over the internet. Very difficult to get hold of!!!

Ah yes, the plummy but knowledgeable tones of Mr Taylor, a long time motorsport man. You tend not to hear of him much now except on the Goodwood coverage.

I never really saw Champions of the Future much, back in those days ITV was heavily regionalised and us plebs in the Yorkshire TV region didn't get it at a normal time. I think it was on at about two in the morning on a Tuesday or something. I only saw it when I was at university down in Coventry and got Central.

Here in Germany the races were live on TV (Eurosport), as far as I remember. I think that's not a suprise, because with Mercedes and Porsche the main-actors were german.

But it seems that I didn't watch them most of the time, although I liked these cars (what resulted in the buy of a RC-1:10 Lotus Elise GT-1 by Kyosho). I guess that was because there was not much about FIA-GT in the normal newspaper, which was my only information source back there. And from time to time I bought a motorsport magazine. Internet was still expensive and I didn't get any information from there.

What I still remember is that I watched the race in Spa-Francorchamps 1997, where Ralf Schumacher had a guest-start in preperation for the F1-race there. And I also attended the 24h of Le Mans on TV of course.

Here is a very good link with pictures and reviews of the 1998 FIA-GT races, sadly (for the non german forum-members), it's in german. Maybe you can use a translation machine... http://www.1998.motorracetime.de/fiagt/strecken.htm

The Mercedes cars look very good, were you able to start some other cars?

Well I've done the template for the GT2 Porsche 911, and painted four of the Porsche teams. As you probably know, most of the GT2 runners were in Porsches so to do them all will take some time! But thankfully it's going reasonably quickly. I'll post some more screenshots after Christmas when I've got the Porsches out of the way.

So far the main problem has been finding a carshape to fit everything. I've done one for mid and rear engined cars (Mercedes, Porsche etc), and another for front engined machines (Panoz, Viper etc) but obviously the GT2 911 looks very different from the GT1 cars, for example. As a result the 911 GT2 looks more like the venerable Porsche 959 from some angles... #-o

Did you add this paragraph later? Somehow I can only remebember the first paragraph of this post. If not I must have overread it... I think you've still found the best compromise possible, the rest has to be solved with the bitmap. And I'm sure you'll come up with a very good result there! Btw, is there anything new you can show us?

Yeah I added it later, bit of an afterthought! I have changed the shape slightly around the headlights but it's basically a case of fine-tuning.

I have done a few more Porsches but there are still seven to go! Grrrr.

I've also done the front-engined car shape, but I'll wait till I've painted a front-engined car till I show it on here.

I've just bought a new XBox which might slow my work down a little but it's still coming on quite quickly, once all the GT2 Porsches are out of the way there's not actually that much more to do, just a couple of GT1 Porsches, a couple of Vipers, the Marcos, a couple of Mustangs and the Bitter, a slight adjustment to the cockpit, then it's all done.

EDIT:

I got bored doing the Porsches, I'll come back to them another time. I'm just putting the finishing touches to the Chrysler Viper template. Screenshots will follow when this is done.

I can understand that. :D The GT2 Porsches aren't the most exiting cars. I'm exited to see the Viper.

I also like your plans for a 2009 and especially for a 2010 GT1-carset!
