Sportscar World Championship 1960's carset WIP

I'm trying to edit some carshapes to eventually put together a 1960's era SWC (or was it WSC?) carset. I modified an existing Mirage M1/GT40 carshape and then modified that result to try and make a more generic carshape that could be used to model other sportscars of that decade such as the Porsche 910, Lola T70, Chaparral 2D, and Ferrari 330P4. I would like to give credit to those who made the original 1967 sportscar carshapes but I can't find the names of anyone that worked on the original carsets listed on the old site that I got them from. Here's a few pics to show what I've got so far.

With a lot of helpful advice on car editing from Greyhead, I'd like to think I've made a pretty good first attempt. However, I still have a long way to go to bring this project to fruition. Helpful comments and advice are welcome.

As a newcomer to GP2 modding, making a workable 1960's SWC style carshape has proven to be quite challenging for me. Thanks in no small part to Greyhead sharing some of his invaluable GP2 modding experience I eventually found the previous carshape to be almost impossible to fit bitmaps over without an unacceptable amount of distortion. So I've got a new carshape built from scratch rather than modifying a previous carshape. I've tried to get it to look like the previous carshape as much as possible while keeping it simple enough to more easily apply bitmaps with as little distortion as possible. It also appears (from my observations... theoretically) that you have to take in to consideration where you place certain parts of the original Microprose F1 carshape on a new carshape because it seems that some (if not all) parts of the original F1 carshape were programmed to be seen only from certain camera angles. For example, let's say that a certain part of the rear wing on the F1 carshape can't be seen from a track cam that's looking from an angle slightly above and to the left or right of the car because the rear wing side panels obstruct the view. If you wanted to use one of those certain parts as a left or right panel of the cockpit that is 'never' obstructed from that same angle slightly above and to the left or right of the car then is seems that the part would still behave as if it was still obstructed. That is to say that it would be invisible at that particular angle. I think this explains why on some carshapes you tend to see parts of the car disappear at certain external or even cockpit view camera angles. Someone mentioned something similar to this in a thread on the forum concerning making fixes to certain carshapes that had a problem of disappearing parts, but aside from that portion of the thread I haven't been able to find anyone else talk about it.

My point here is that I really didn't realize how much time and effort through trial and error that GP2 modders had to exert to give GP2 fans all the really cool stuff that keeps us coming back to GP2. I feel that I've learned a good little bit from this small project and I hope I can eventually deliver something that people will really like to use with GP2.

Here's some pics of how the new carshape is coming along.

Hopefully this represents a bit of progress in the right direction. Here we have a gaggle of Porsche 910 sportscars racing along the famous (or infamous if you like) Nurburgring Nordschleife course.

I'll be adding a small front end for more detail to the cars head-on view and in doing so I will be raising the overall height of the car by hopefully 25 percent. I think the bitmap details are a bit washed out because I needed to darken the source image for the bitmaps. The rear canopy is blank for now because it's gonna be really hard to get details painted on the 8x52 and 8x19 carshape parts I ended up using to keep the flat rear canopy look as opposed to the tear drop look of FK's (V12-Power) WSC sportscars. If anyone would like to have a go at trying to paint the carshape as it is now just let me know and I'll send you a full size bmp image of the template. Also, I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me to a 1950s-1960s style cockpit that would work well for WSC sportscars.

Looking pretty good so far, the shading looks good at the rear end, great stuff!

Thanks for the compliment. I couldn't have gotten this far without your help.

I can't quite get the Porsche to a more acceptable look with the current carshape, so I decided to modify it a bit to use as the carshape for the GT-40 (MkI and II) and the M1 Mirage. Here are some pics of a GT-40 Mk I on a test run around Rouen.

I'm not much of an artist, so I mostly cut and paste the main images and paint in some small simple shapes. I haven't figured out why I end up with green pixels when I cut and paste images for the chassis textures. The same thing happened with the Porsche 910 cockpit I hastily modified from a screen capture from a Grand Prix Legends 1967 Sportscar Mod demo video on Youtube. I hope I can fix the green pixel problem, especially for the cockpit. I'm also hoping I can get permission to use modified versions of the cockpits from the GPL mod for this potential 1967 WSC mod. I'll continue to work on the Porsche 910 shape (my fave car) to use as the shape for the other cars. I like the front end and the cockpit canopy but I need a two tiered shape since the rear end is a bit higher than the front end in cars such as the Porsche 910, Lola T70, GT-40 Mk IV and Ferrari 330 P4.

Is this still being worked on? I'm very keen to race with this when it's finished.

Ciao tim70, stunning work, absolutely indeed!
I'm sorry to arrive 5 years later compared to your post-date.
I hope you succeded to recreate this incredible era of sport-cars.
Cheers.
