Car shape editing (again)

This is perhaps a question for rremedio or AAS.

I understand you two both know something about using a hex editor to change things in GP2. I seem to remember rremedio was doing a 1977 carset where he'd managed to change where on the car bitmap the car shape took its points from. In other words, he'd swapped around some of the textures, so that in theory he could put a part of the bitmap onto any part of the car.

Now I know you can do this in the car shape editor, but it only appears in the editor and not in the game. I understand rremedio used a hex editor to make it appear where he wanted within the game.

Now I have an interesting idea for GP2 which involves something similar, although I won't go into it right now. Basically I would like to change the bitmap and be able to map this bitmap onto the shape to make it easier to work with different shapes. However I know absolutely nothing about hex editors. Presumably I'd have to go tinkering with the GP2.exe, but how would I go about it? What do I need to change? And if I did get my idea to work, would I have to include this modified GP2.exe in a carset ZIP in order for the GP2 community to use the modified bitmap/shape combination?

P.S. Sorry for being long-winded!

All I know about this deals with the carshape and the bitmap.

Would be great to know about the shape-related secrets in the gp2.exe.
I'm not sure about that. Maybe this secrets are stored in the shape. But I can't find them.
Which texture is visible from which direction?
Where can I change the settings for light and shadow for the polygons?

I will try to share my knowledge in the next days.

Perhaps the lights and shadows are in UnkData part in the shape... It would be nice to contact the creators of GP2 to know that ... But how?

Andreas, would it be OK if I e-mailed you my ideas to see if you can help me?

Hey guys, sorry for not being active for a while. I've been too busy on the last months.

Oh god...I've tried so hard to make this work, but I can't find the bitmap info in the exe. What I change with the hex editor is the places in the shape where each piece of the bitmaps is shown, but I can't find where GP2 cuts the bitmap in pieces (does anybody understand my english?). I guess the info is not in the shape file, but somewhere else in the exe.

I've asked even SDI if he could help me and he gave me tons of info about the secrets of GP2 (secrets that will help us in the future, I'm sure), but even him couldn't help us on this subject.

It would be groundbreaking if we could work it out...

Oh bugger! That scuppers my plan then, never mind!

Hi AAS, I got several questions regarding this:
- Are you still planning to create this tutorial?
- Was it a huge effort to update the carshapes?
- Can the edited carshape be installed with every GP2 or is it only possible on your PC? (Should be useable for all if I remember correctly, when importing an hex-edited shape it was also saved with the new values as far as I remember)
- Could you make your carshape downloadable?

I would love to update the sportscar carshapes, too, to get finally rid of these silly bugs. ;-)

My question is can we race together with low and high nose shapes :?:

Last days I worked again with a hex edited carshape.
A Trabant Shape.
I forgot something since I made the hex edited touring shape.
I think I'm back in business now.

Now I will have a look at the sportscar carshapes

The Trabant Shape was a chaotic project.
I have moved many points and verticies in the carshape editor.
I made many changes in the hex editor by trial and error.
I lost control over my notes, maybe I can make the tutorial with the next project.

Currently it is a huge effort to update the carshapes.
With more practice it should be easier.

You can import/export the shape with the car editor.
I tried it with ger. and eng. exe.
Editing the shape in the car editor after hex editing can give uneexpected errors.

This looks amazing! I`ve planned to make something in that way with smart roadster and smart roadster coupe, but editing shapes is not my kind of soup. Maybe I`ll manage it someday :D

But well done, I`m impressed

Agreed.

And those GP2-leds etc. are blended well.
