I had my wires crossed- I forgot the smoke and fire animations were different. A water animation would need to be a little wider though- almost we need 2 thin ones where the tires are.

I don't know how well the smoke animation would work.. You'd need to get rid of the fire, and it would be kind of silly looking with all of the cars doing this.

Standard dosbox runs the time at a faster rate than the original game. Try Dosbox ECE- it fixes this.
