GP2 in 51fps!

Post by Michael82 »

Hi!
I tested the app "lossless scaling" for GP2 after have seen the videos of Gplaps and Ted Meat on youtube
and it works. It seems better with Dosbox-Staging instead Dosbox-ECE that's why I give you my config file. You have to look the line "dos rate" and write the original fps of game. For gp2 I wrote 25.600 but for icr2 it depends (but max 30 in the game). Let me know if you have any problem or if you find another good setup. Now we have Gp2 in 51fps! Enjoy!

Brilliant work, thanks for sharing! I got it working, very smooth and lovely. I only tested it by watching AI drivers so don't know how steering lag is.

Also I see you had vsync disabled and on your video there was a lot of screen tearing? Might I ask why? Did you get input lag with vsync?

Thanks! Yes unfortunately there are a lot of screen tearing in the video. At first I had desactivated vsync because I got too much input lag but after change with dos rate option I forgot to reactivate. Now If I activate vsync in config Dosbox-staging and desactivate under lossless scaling it seems better. Could you let me know if it is the same for you? Thanks to have identify that!

Excellent, thank you once again Michael! Finally had some time today to try it out.... and all your settings worked just like you said they would!

I also put together a brief tutorial and it's here in case someone will find it helpful:

I tried to comment on your youtube but I think youtube is censoring things. Does staging take care of the game playing too fast? This was the main reason I switched to ECE years ago.

Oh, sorry if you got censored some how. But the answer is yes, the emulation speed in Staging seems to be correct.

Personally I was even more worried about the controls, because the insufficient wheel resolution and deadzone were horrible with other DOSBox-versions. Thankfully that's no problem either, it seems to work the same way ECE did!

Did you get the game running with the original config file? If you did, then I'd use that and just make the changes to dos_rate and host_rate as in my video.

Also I uploaded my config-file online, you can try it if you want, it works for me: https://www.tedmeat.com/uploads/dosbox-staging.conf

Note that I don't currently use GP2Lap, so I wonder if this might cause the issue? Can you run the game without activating GP2Lap?

Unfortunately, Joey, once you get GP2 up and running and Lossless Scaling to work as intended, you're not out of the woods yet :D Because of your YouTube series you'll obviously need to be able to record as well! You'll need to do a few extra steps because you'll find that you can't record the video layer created by Lossless Scaling with OBS (I'm assuming you use OBS?).

Thankfully there's a way, here's a video on how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws62DDu_obo

Not to get off topic, but if you aren't using gp2lap yet, you don't know what you're missing. I can't imagine gp2 without gp2lap when it comes to custom tracks and especially fixing the backwards-rear wing graphics problem at distances. I love gp2lap.

DOS4GW is mandatory when using GP2Lap. Are you sure it is in the same folder as GP2.exe / GP2Lap.exe?

Hi All,

Here's a snippet from the current config file I use for DosBox.

All I did with Michael's supplied config file and yours Ted was to copy and paste the lines:
mount c c:\
c:
cd games
cd gp2
Gp2Lap.exe

I can't figure out why it isnt working...

Also, thanks for the link re my videos Ted, will take a look at those too over weekend!

Hi All,

just tried to re-do the config file for Staging and still get the same message saying error.

I Copied yours Ted, changed the bottom bit for the GP2Lap.exe (same as I currently use for DosBox ECE but still get this error...
Any advice anyone?????

I've got with working with GP2Lap without problems with both ECE and Stanging.

On Staging it looks indeed much better.

Can you check the line "memsize" in the config file? I think by default it should be 16, which should be enough, but you could try 32 and see if that helps.

Am I the only one to have problem with DOSBOX Staging?
vlcsnap-2024-11-13-23h18m49s105.png
This is how I see the game even before applying LLS. If I take a screenshot with F12 it looks ok, so I had to use the print key to record it. But I can tell you the game it´s almost impossible to play.
I´ve used Michael´s setup for DosBox. Do you know if there is something I can change in the setting to improve it or is the computer possibly too old?
