The story was pulled again, also from a German news site that immediately picked it up, so it's probably still a bit crazy right now. I think we'll get a more definite info within the next few hours.

Of course if this is true, it would shake up this and next year's championship in a rather huge way....

Edit (as I was typing this): This site now claims having checked in with a FIA communications person who supposedly said there is no decision yet... :?

Yeah I just looked on autosport.com again and the story and mysteriously disappeared. Then I refreshed and the site crashed, as did the FIA's and f1.com! ](*,)

Formula1.com wrote:McLaren have been excluded from the 2007 constructors’ championship and fined US$100 million following Thursday’s FIA World Motor Sport Council hearing in Paris. Drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have not been penalized and are free to continue their fight for the drivers' title.
"The WMSC have stripped Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of all constructor points in the 2007 FIA Formula One world championship and the team can score no points for the remainder of the season,” said an FIA statement.

"Furthermore, the team will pay a fine equal to $100m, less the FOM (Formula One Management) income lost as a result of the points deduction.”
OK, so McLaren is fined, but why....?
Formula1.com wrote:"The WMSC will receive a full technical report on the 2008 McLaren car and will take a decision at its December 2007 meeting as to what sanction, if any, will be imposed on the team for the 2008 season."

The full reasons for this decision will be issued on the 14th September 2007.

* Points gained by other teams so far this season will not be affected.

** No McLaren representative will be allowed on the podium should a McLaren driver win any of the remaining races of the 2007 season.
We will have to wait till tomorrow for a full explanation...

What a load of old crap. This sort of thing's been going on for decades. What happened when lotus pioneered ground effect in 1977-78? The whole grid of late 1978 and 1979 was populated by a load of Lotus 79 clones. Indeed, on ITV yesterday the F1 presenter interviewed Patrick Head and he even said that the current Williams wing was a copy of McLaren's! And as for Alonso and de la Rosa's e-mails about Ferrari's set up, if you're a driver and you're given info about what the other teams are doing, you're not just going to switch off and ignore it are you? The whole thing leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth, and for Max Mosley to then come out and say that the punishment didn't go far enough really did beggar belief. If Mosley wants to play politics, then he should sod off to government. Formula One is (or should be) a SPORT.

I suspect it's not going to boost people's mods here in any way :? but as the FIA announced, transcripts from the two WMSC hearings have also been published today: http://www.fia.com/mediacentre/Press_Re ... 07-01.html

Interesting stuff. Particularly interesting to me is the obvious breakdown in communication between Ron Dennis and Fernando Alonso. Now I like Alonso, but he really does seem to be coming across as a right miserable spoiled brat! You'd think he'd be trying to rally the team around him like he did at Renault but it seems like he's doing everything he can to turn them against him. Now it's been revealed that Alonso and Dennis haven't spoken since the Hungarian GP. Surely he can't continue like that? He's contracted for 2008 but how can he stay in a team when he won't talk to the boss? I really don't understand it all.

Here's something that was recently brought to my attention which puts the punishment into perspective, and also shows just how obscene the amount of money swimming around F1 is.

McLaren, as we all know, were fined $100million.

In 1999, Britain suffered one of its worst rail disasters, at Paddington station in London. The crash killed 31 people, and faulty track was blamed. The company responsible for maintaining the track, Railtrack, were fined £4million, equivalent to around $8million.

Draw your own conclusions.
