Fictitious 1994 Season

Post by torana_05 »

Hi guys,

I am constructing my own alternate universe 1994 carset. I have taken certain liberties with the truth including rumours around the early 90's also and putting my own spin on history. I have created the performance of each driver for the season. I have made it a little more competitive than what would have been expected in real life pre-Imola. Ayrton would still be the most consistent driver with winning 5 races out of 10 (Randomised events in gp2 edit) and featuring on the podium a couple of times as well. Reliability is low with an average of 10-15 cars finishing each race, sometimes less! I have included a blurp in what the season would have looked like coming into the season. I am most happy to share it with you guys but I have no permissions but considering the age of certain cars and carsets used (some cars are from the 90s! with the bulk being at least 10 years old) does this still apply? I have applied all thanks in the carset information that includes the blurp. I have also included a randomised sample of a race. Any suggestions or advice on what to include or change would be great.

Thanks

History:
============
This carset involves numerous changes to compare with real life and the differences will be explained Team by Team.

Williams - Renault:
Williams would still be the predominant force they were in real-life but would be less successful in 1993 thanks to the McLaren Lamborghini and Ayrton Senna pairing. Frank Williams signed Jean Alesi for the 1991 season on a four-year contract alongside Williams returnee Nigel Mansell. The pair would be closer rivals than Riccardo Patrese and Nigel Mansell to win every race together in 92. The rivalry was compared to the Senna-Prost relationship, where on-track battles were fierce, resulting in contact and accusations of favouritism between the drivers and suppliers. Accusations from Mansell included that French Engine supplier Renault gave advantages to Alesi. In contrast, Alesi bemoaned the lack of pace in his chassis. Alesi would eventually overcome The Senna McLaren and 1992 Championship winner Nigel Mansell by 4 points in a nail-biting championship finish in Adelaide. Nigel Mansell announced his retirement at the Portuguese Weekend in September. This allowed the door for Ayrton Senna to join the team in 1994.

Tyrrell - Yamaha:
The Tyrrell team would be unchanged from real-life in 1994. Although Ukyo Katayama was only retained because of the Mild Seven sponsorship he bought with him from Japan.

Benetton - Ford:
Michael Schumacher would remain at the Benetton team for 1994 but not after rumours surrounding the Pacific MiG Audi team. The new Anglo-German outfit inquired into his services multiple times throughout 1992 and 1993. Schumacher finally committing to his contract after his win in the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Alongside Schumacher, in the no.6 Benetton would be Formula 1 rookie Canadian Paul Tracey. Paul impressed the Benetton team after testing for them in Estoril after consistently outpacing their race driver at the time, Riccardo Patrese. Bernie Ecclestone, also pushing for Formula 1 to gain a broader support base in North America, helped Paul Tracey find the budget to compete in his first season in 1994.

McLaren - Lamborghini
After a winless1992 season, McLaren swapped Honda engines for Lamborghini for the 1993 season. This appeased Ayrton Senna to stay for the complete season, who later became a regular race winner throughout 1993. The Lamborghini engine was unreliable at the start of the season, and opportunities were missed due to constant failures. By the end of 1993, the Lamborghini was reliable and fast.
It has been touted for 1994 that Lamborghini has developed a lighter, more economical and powerful engine. However, questions over reliability were raised again after failures in testing.

Mika Hakkinen retains his seat in McLaren after his brilliant performances at the end of 1993. Mika replaced American Michael Andretti after a poor 1993 campaign after failing to adapt to the electronic aids and lack of testing. Damon Hill and Eddie Irvine were both rumoured to be frontrunners for the seat alongside Mika Hakkinen.
Team manager Ron Dennis went for experience over youth, choosing to replace Ayrton Senna with Riccardo Patrese. At the Launch of the new MP4/9 Ron Dennis was quoted, "Our determination to win races is undiminished. This commitment will be reflected in an even greater and more intensive test and development programme for 1994. Securing the services of a veteran of Riccardo's maturity will undoubtedly contribute a great deal to the fulfilment of our objective for Lamborghini and McLaren this year".

Footwork - Ford
Jos Verstappen was bitterly disappointed not to receive the second Benetton drive after losing favour to Canadian Paul Tracey. The Canadian's budget is the primary factor of Jos missing the seat but has picked up a paid drive at Footwork alongside 1992 Ferrari refugee Gianni Morbidelli.

Lotus - Mugen Honda
Ex-Sauber driver J.J. Lehto signs for the Hethel based team after falling out with the Swiss team during 1993. Johnny Herbert's services will remain for 1994 who is upbeat for the coming season after sampling the new radical Mugen Honda engine (1994 Monza style).

Jordan - Hart
Martin Brundle is a late signing for Jordan after frontrunning favourite Eddie Irvine signed for the Sauber Team. Martin Brundle is heading to the Silverstone based team after spending a year in France with Ligier. "Martin signing is important for us, as he has tremendous experience with 10 years on the Formula 1 grid but also with the frontrunning Renault engine", Eddie Jordan remarked. "Working at Jordan feels like home for me", Brundle said to BBC Grandstand. "The team is small but really efficient, and the car definitely looks fast on which we hope to capitalise". The team was one of the first to test the new 1994 spec cars, with Rubens Barrichello testing on the 11th January at a wet Silverstone.

Larrousse - Lamborghini
Gérard Larrousse is looking forward to 1994 to continue up the grid with the all-new powerful Lamborghini engine. Eric Bernard is a returning recruit for the Paris-based outfit and is looking to settle back in quickly alongside Eric Comas. "We are looking to build on our good performances from last year and aim to be in the points regularly" commented Comas

Minardi - Ford
The Faenza based team have an all-Italian lineup for 1994 with Ferrari test driver Nicola Larini and ex Ferrari driver Michele Alboreto. Minardi is looking to consolidate after a poor 1993 performance. The budget seems to be the word on everyone's lips at Faenza as 1994 sees Minardi merge with BMS Scuderia Italia for both teams to survive. Giancarlo Minardi says having an all Italian team will help bring the team together and focus on reliability.

Ligier - Renault
Ligier has an all-new lineup for 1994 with Damon Hill and reigning Formula 3000 Champion Olivier Panis. Renault was impressed by Damon's feedback and consistency when testing for the Williams Team and convinced the Ligier for 1994. Damon is pleased to get a competitive race seat after being a test driver for 3 years and driving unreliable Brabhams in 1992. Reigning Formula 3000 hot shoe Olivier Panis is hot property at the moment with multiple teams interested. However, his consistency is unknown after testing accidents in January and February.

Ferrari
1993 would be a year Ferrari forgot. The car suffered from multiple technical and engine-related failures. Still, Gehard Berger was capable of making it into the points. 1994 rule changes look to favour the Scuderia as refuelling may benefit their thirsty but tremendously powerful v12 engine.

Shock signing is Italian-American Michael Andretti, after a poor 1993 campaign was signed to the famous Italian team. It has been rumoured that Bernie Ecclestone's and Michael's famous father, Mario Andretti, the right people were connected to make Michael's Ferrari dream a reality.
Throughout testing, it seems the Maranello based outfit have made giant steps forward in chassis design, but reliability could cause hiccups

Sauber - Mercedes
Sauber is another team with an all-new lineup for 1994 with Irishman Eddie Irvine alongside sportscar ace Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Mercedes were keen to have a German driver in the team, so the Mönchengladbach based driver was signed for 1994. This is Frentzen's first season in Formula 1 but has a reputation from his sportscar career of being better than Michael Schumacher.

Eddie Irvine signs for Sauber as the fiery Irishman impressed with Jordan in Suzuka and Adelaide last year. Irivne was an outsider for the Sauber seat and was strongly backed for the second Jordan seat. Although there may be friction between the two, as Irvine has been quoted about, Eddie Jordan "was too busy fucking around, so I signed for Sauber."

Sauber looks to improve and build on a solid 1993 and hope to be regular points finishes.

Simtek - Ford

The Simtek team would be unchanged from real-life in 1994. Although the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna would not occur

Pacific - Audi

The Pacific Grand Prix team is a new team for Formula 1 in 1994. However, Pacific Grand Prix and Audi both had separate plans to enter Formula 1 in 1993 and 1994. Pacific Grand Prix boss Keith Wiggins revealed Pacific Grand Prix's plans to compete in 1993 at the 1992 Tokyo Motor Show, announcing an engine deal with Ilmor. German driver Michael Bartels, who previously tried to qualify the Lotus in 1991 four times, was announced as their driver for the 1993 season. After the news was announced, Illmor retracted the powertrain contract to pair with German car giant Mercedes in their Sauber contract. This left Pacific Grand Prix with no engine supplier to compete in the 1993 campaign.

Audi was also in secret development for an all-German assault for Formula 1 in 1994. Audi was rumoured to supply engines to Benetton in 1994 under the Cosworth name. Audi had developed a unique water-cooled v10 engine that delivers 800HP at 15.00 RPM with a top speed of 360KM/H, weighing in at 119 kilos. Unfortunately for Audi the Formula 1 dream stalled, aiding the partnership between Wiggins and Audi. It was never disclosed how close the Audi chassis was to completion, but initial pictures showed it shared common traits with the uncompetitive 1992 Ferrari. The German Manufacturer even approached Benneton star Michael Schumacher to join them for their 1994 campaign.

A contract was signed in March 1993 for the marriage of chassis and engine. The Pacific Audi (PAR-01) ran numerous times throughout 1993 and was majorly updated throughout the year from the original Reynard based PR-01 chassis. The PAR-01 shows promise, but a late change to 1994 regulations seem to have caught the team on the back foot as the car was revealed late. Question marks being raised over lap-time consistency and engine reliability and development as the partnership is still in its infancy.

Austrian driver Karl Wendlinger was poached from Sauber to spearhead the campaign and remains upbeat about points this season. While Italian Stefano Modena is looking to rebuild his career at the Anglo-German team bringing Parmalat money.
