About The GP2 Championship

The GP2 Championship Rules Part 1-General Rules

What You Need

Well of course, you need a copy of GP2, plus the latest version of Steven Young's GP2edit, for reasons explained below.
A copy of GP2Lap is recommended as if you are suspected of cheating and you are not using GP2Lap you are more likely to be disqualified!
Also you will need to subscribe to the compulsory announcement mailing list, to recieve notification about the championship, click here to do so.

Game Configuration

GP2edit is required to use your division's carset. The carsets' purpose is to make sure that nobody gets an unfair advantage and everything runs smoothly. You MUST patch GP2 with your game's carset before you take part in your race AND qualifying sessions that you will submit to us. Failure to do so will result in SEVERE PENALTIES. So please play fair :-).

You also need to alter a few options for your team, click on the "Car Settings" button in GP2edit, and adjust the Grip, Power and Weight to match your team's Chassis, Engine and Tyres (list of values on Rules Page 3) and then you are ready to drive!

Now you can have all failures OFF, you can still have them on, but it will not give you an advantage...

Any setup is allowed, if you are no good at setting up your car, there are several sites that have setups you can download.

Divisions

There is no getting around the fact that some drivers will be a lot better than others, if drivers of all abilities competed amongst each other it would be boring, no challenge for the top drivers, and no hope for those at the other end of the spectrum. The GP2 Championship therfore has six different divisions, the division names are named after real life racing-formulas, and each division is given an abbreviation for notation purposes.

Class Description Notation
Formula 1 Ace A
Formula 3000 Pro B
Formula 3 Semi-Pro C
Formula 1600 Amateur D
Formula 600 Rookie E
Formula Vee Rookie (Autobrake) F

You MUST race at your skill level in races, in the qualifying sessions, choosing a lower skill level is illegal, but if you want to drive a higher skill level in qualifying then that's fine, but you can't do it in the race (as racing a higher level will give an advantage in terms of less traffic.)

Each skill level was made up of groups of 14 teams, so every team had a space in the carset. This year there is just one carset per division, and teams 15 onwards will be in a GP2edit 1TM file in the Zip. Your Driver ID now simply consists of your division letter and race number, so if you are car number 24 in F3000 your ID would be B24.

Each division has it's own settings for Race Length and Allowed Driver Aids. See table below for details:

Class Race Length Allowed Aids
Formula 1 75% F2, F7
Formula 3000 60% F2, F6, F7
Formula 3 45% F2, F3, F6, F7
Formula 1600 30% F2, F3, F5, F6, F7
Formula 600 20% F1, F2, F3, F5, F6, F7
Formula Vee 20% F1, F2, F3, F5, F6, F7

NB1 : In Formula Vee, Autobrakes (F1) are MANDATORY, in Formula 600 they are optional.
NB2 : Driver Aid F4 (Indestructibility) is not allowed at ANY LEVEL. If you can't drive for at least a lap without smashing up your car, you shouldn't be out there :-)
NB3 : You do not have to use ALL of the allowed driver aids, for example a rookie could drive with no aids if he finds it yields quicker lap times. The exception being Autobrakes must be used in Formula Vee.

KEY TO DRIVERS AIDS: (In case you didn't already know)

F1-Auto Brakes
F2-Auto Gears
F3-Self-Correcting Spin
F5-Ideal Line
F6-Suggested Gear
F7-Throttle Help.

To join you have to be part of a team. If you are not, and no existing teams take up your offers for a ride, you can set up your own team, details of how in the Team Management Section.

Race Weekend

The only two sessions you need to take part in are qualifying and the race (of course). There are separate deadlines for each, you MUST make sure you submit your results before the appropriate deadline.

Qualifying

Once you have completed all the previous steps, you'll now be ready to qualify for the Grand Prix. Go to "Practice Any Circuit" and the track you are competing on, REMEMBER TO HAVE PATCHED GP2 WITH YOUR DIVISION'S CARSET. Take as many laps as you want to set your time, you will be the only car on the track, once you are satisfied with your time, save your hotlap and send it to us as an e-mail attatchment, and mention your time in the body of your e-mail message as well as your driver ID. Failure to submit a time means you will start at the back of the grid, which does not mean you will start 26th, for example if you are one of 15 drivers competing in that race, you will start 15th. If two or more drivers fail to submit a time the order will be decided on championship position, if any of them are tied for the championship, the order will be determined by car number. If two drivers submit an identical time, whoever submitted first will be ahead on the grid.

The Race

Go to "Drive Options" and in "Quickrace Options" carefully select your starting position, and correct track and race length, and make sure you are at the correct difficulty level. (Most of these options should be in place if you have patched GP2 with the correct carset). Then go to "Quickrace" and take part in your race. Once you have finished, pause the game and save it when the words RACE OVER appear, then send it as a zipped attatchment to me, on or before the deadline date.

If you qualify 27th or above, you start 26th on the grid, and one second will be docked off your time to represent the time taken to travel from your virtual grid slot to your actual one (26th), so if you start 27th one second will be taken off your time, two seconds for 28th, three for 29th, ten for 36th etc.
